Hi there fellow consumer of media. I sometimes watch anime and read manga and novels.
I am not trying to conform to any particular highbrow standard. I dont believe in any objective or universal critical standards. There are quite a few works that are critically acclaimed in some way or form but I still didnt find particularly interesting.
I generally prefer if there is some actual message to the work. We have all seen the classic matchup: the goodytwoshoes square off against the embodiments of evil. Everyone knows that the obviously evil supervillain is in fact... well evil but wheres the fun in that? Maybe the villain could actually have more detailed beliefs maybe even ideologies. Make a stand on something and argue your case.
I generally favor plot continuity and cohesion over an episodic format. Decisions should come with consequences after all. It is also a problem if there is no conflict to speak of. Superlowkey slice of life usually isnt ideal.
I feel like there is often an excess focus on action scenes in their most straightforward form. It would be nice to also see scheming mind games and strategies sometimes. Imagine having characters who are capable of telling lies.
I also probably dont give as much weight to visuals as most people. I am more interested in the story dialogue etc.
Fun fact: At the writing of this AniList is missing the Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu novel which is a shame.
