What do you think when you hear the word isekai? The first thing that probably comes to your mind is lonely otaku who gets hit by a truck and wakes up in alternate reality and no one can blame you for that. A person can surely say that whole genre of isekai is boring and repetitive... unless hes seen Garzeys Wing. The thing about Garzeys Wing is that compared to any other isekai its actually good. Otaku protagonist? Generic fantasy world? Shitty waifus? It has none of that shit. Normally being transported to a new world would be something to be excited about but in reality its trully horryfying experience. Christopher Chiaki our main character couldve lived peaceful life he couldve attended his high school class reunion but instead he is thrown into the middle of the war to become the holy warrior and to put an end to slavery. What is really great about it is how confused Chris is with all that. He doesnt quickly adapt to his surroundings he struggles yet overcomes his obstacles like a real man. His sword is incredibly dull and he doesnt have any special skills. While Chris may not be a particullary bright man his heart is in the right place. He manages to put up a decent fight and keeps surprising the viewer in many ways just as the whole narrative. When it comes to narrative Ive never seen anything more complex and thought provoking. Every second of Garzeys Wing gives us a unique piece of information that helps us solve the mystery of this fascinating fantasy world that contains even dinosaurs. We all love dinosaurs and just like dinosaurs everybody loves inner monologues which are taken to a whole new level due to extremely clever writing. All you need to know is that Chris was split in two different selves and he can communicate with his other half in a different reality. It may be confusing at first but there is no need to worry as everything is surely explained later on. Another great thing that Garzeys Wing manages to accomplish is its superb character development. We can see that through Chris and minor characters that certainly get sexier as the story progresses even Chriss sword has its mini arc. There is nothing more we would ever want to see. When it comes to animation I could write about all day how revolutionary it was but I wont since we all know that its not animation that makes a good show. What I want to look upon is voice acting. Dont you ever think of watching Garzeys Wing subbed if you do then you are going to ruin yourself the whole experience. It SHOULD be watched with english dub just as other timeless classics such as Cowboy Bebop. Garzeys Wing has the best english dub a whole medium has to offer. Its not just voice acting but the lines which are greatly enchanced in english. The voice cast has many well known actors as Richard Nagel and many others. When I hear the words Garzeys Wing it reminds me of a wonderful time I once had in my life. It reminds me of good old days spent at my grandmothers house eating peanut butter sandwiches. Garzeys Wing is as good as these sandwiches were. I mean I dont even like peanut butter but god damn it these sandwiches had that special feeling about them like there was no peanut butter at all even if there was. I cant really name the feelings I experienced while watching Garzeys Wing.
