Arifureta is not by any means an isekai that breaks the mold of the genre. In regard to the show the animation is somewhat bland the art style is passable and the liberal use of bad CGI for the monsters is egregious. So far as that goes Im somewhat disappointed. But after watching the first episode and reading the show synopsis I found the concept interesting as far as an isekai is concerned so I took it upon myself to read a translation of the web novel. Im certainly glad that I did. The web novel too was not a diamond in the rough but for the sake of understanding the source material I did my best to power through the translation. After getting through what amounted to the first few volumes I actually found myself hooked on the novel. It had an interesting cast that hit most of the tropes relatively well covering the bases for the characters and the character development was noticeable. As far as the harem aspect goes it went against the typical mold. MC meets girl mutual affection follows and the addition of more heroines did not detract from the main romance between the two for the majority of the series. It was a rare example of a harem setting with a core romance and the resulting character relationships building around that was entertaining to read. The explanation of the thought processes of the MC and the description of the action scenes was acceptable and for the most part I couldnt put it down. There were a few places where the pacing was shoddy but all in all those parts were sparse. The evolution of the dynamic relationships between the MC and the eventually welldeveloped cast was funny the psychological hurdles present for each of the characters were well developed and expounded on and the twists and turns as you read were not necessarily unpredictable but that did not impact the experience in a negative manner. When comparing the reading of the web/light novel to the anime the difference is night and day. The anime does nothing extraordinary or even remarkable to explain the character thought processes thus far which is one of the points that I found so captivating in regard to the written version. The written version was far and away better as can generally be expected when translating to an anime but if theres one thing Im thankful for its that the anime made me aware of the series. The official translation of the web novel into the light novel format seems to be doing quite well and it makes me happy to see the series being made available to read through official routes in the west. The beginning portrayed an emotionally despondent youth after an unexpected betrayal his salvation through the meeting of the main heroine the romantic evolution of his relationship with said heroine and the efforts of the harem cast vying for his affection while accepting that they cannot challenge the main heroines position of main squeeze. It was a good read and the ending wasnt too shabby. Its also nice that there is an abundance of epilogue chapters containing side stories after the end of the core adventure which caters to the fan service lovers among us. I would definitely recommend at least reading the series and supporting the official release where possible. Also TeamYue all the way.
