Hello this is my first review so hoping it ends up solid. This show is a criminally underrated masterpiece that needs more eyes on it and I hope this review helps in getting someone to give it a fair chance or at least get it on peoples radar. Anyways before I go into detail I think you might really enjoy this on a completely blind entry no reading the synopsis or anything of the sort. Go in blind It has a strong narrative hook in the first episodes midpoint and I would be surprised if that doesnt get you intrigued to continue watching as it builds up more and more. The synopsis feeds you information a bit out of order from how you encounter it in the show and it takes away a little bit from the experience. So if you choose to go blind then I hope you enjoy the ride. Now for the people who dont want to go onto the roller coaster with eyes closed I will go into some mild spoilers but not any major events of the later half of the show. The events of the show take place is this a made up afterlife called Kong it is a world between living and true death and people who have died enter into this world into different roles there are the normal citizens who have all died in a way that they have a strong desire keeping them attached to the world of the living and they have a desire to return there are weapons that can have the spirit of people who died and dont have a desire to return to life. In this afterlife these characters fight for Qian or pretty much their memories they challenge each other to mech fights cause this gotta be a crazy anime and they bet their Qian on themselves winning. 220https://i.ur.com/6Y4jvNW.gif If you fight successfully for long enough and gain all your memories back you can return to life but if you lose all your Qian you a completely dead and gone from both worlds. When people come to Kong they can have a little or no Qian and the amount is based on the moral character you had in the world of the living. Lastly there are Cores. Cores are people who do have a desire to return to life but are completely morally reprehensible so they dont become normal citizens they become a powerful weapon that will possess whoever uses them. This is a very meaty explanation for the worlds mechanics but the show does a lovely job on explaining these elements in a slower pace as doing as much as it can to explain such things visually or to build up to strong reveals. For example they tell you Qian you come into the world with is based on moral character happens past episode 1 you first see are main character A Gan actually hold was is noticed as a pretty large amount when she comes to Kong. The explanation comes after getting the first bit of A Gans memories being that she was a seriously ill child who didnt get to experience much of the world. But lets get into the really important stuff why would you want to watch this? Well this was directed and written by Haoling Lihttps://anilist.co/staff/127382/HaolingLi Im not one to hold creatives in high regard as I like to separate art from the artist but there is a lot to compare between this show and another original work from him that has been held in higher regard and has become decently popular Link Clickhttps://anilist.co/anime/126403/LinkClick/. Both Link Click and this show are very similar they have a pretty complex and hard to explain quickly concept that is pretty unique from many other shows and secondly he used this unique and complex world or supernatural mechanics to tell very effective stories related to realistic human dynamics and circumstances. For any who have already watch Link Click you likely found so much joy in that through its well created mystery elements held through out the course of the show a well developed and thought out mechanical system and ultimately the human stories that are brought out through it. The stories are emotionally raw and if you like me probably had you choked up at pivotal moments. 220https://i.ur.com/W9b0MZh.gif Well Im here to say that this show is very similar in that regard. The concept of having all our character being dead people with a rich history and life hidden in memories they have to unlock allows for amazing reveals and powerful storytelling. It also presents these stories in a very unique way. Some may be turned off from the visual styling if youve seen little bits youve likely seen CG characters that you feel well be hard to attach to but its one of the most surprising CG shows Ive seen plus it isnt all CGI no its not 2D but they actually implement shot footage to do flashbacks of the characters memories. 220https://i.ur.com/6OMmq9X.gif I was very surprised to see this and thought it would be done once at the start but its a reoccurring element brought back to reveal the memories of out characters past lives. In a way it makes this partially not an anime but this choice is so effective in given an emotional attachment that is so different and raw from many other show out there. If I havent already sold you I want to talk about episode 3 that just sells you on how they can use its concept for such powerful storytelling so please skip if your looking to really keep a lot of the experience for your self. And there is just more in this show that just that every single character came to Kong for a reason and learning about their past moral character current desires is a huge driver for the series. There are plenty of twist there are many powerful moments and I want to see this show get the praise and recognition it deserves. It stands on a similar level as Link Click and I would say this is even more unique in the anime landscape while people like to hate on CGI I think when they use it intentionally and work to the benefits it can be powerful and the fight scenes that are important vehicles to the overall drama wouldve have been as good in another for just like how way it goes about showing character memories sticks out as a very creative and unique choice in enhancing the dramatic elements. So anyways become the one of five people who have probably watched this show. To call this a hidden gem is an understatement. As of me writing this its completely free to watch on YouTube on the official BiliBili channel linked directly on this shows entry page. So there is no excuse to skip this. But I hope this convinces some people to watch this incredible masterpiece and I hope you love it as much as I did. 220https://i.ur.com/U1P3T9f.gif
