If you know me or have read my previous reviews on Eva youre most likely aware that I really really didnt like the Evangelion series nor EoE for multiple reasons the characters pacing plot etc. I honestly didnt like any of it. The only redeeming factors for me were the atmosphere and fights. So naturally I didnt have high hopes for the rebuilds and was contemplating whether or not Ill watch them at all.
Well Im glad that I did because both the first and second rebuild movie have been really enjoyable and most problems Ive had with the OG Evangelion have been fixed most notably the pacing which due to being a movie and having a shorter overall runtime has seen a huge change. Obviously unlike the first rebuild movie Eva 2.0 is quite different from the show so its hard to directly compare them but the parts that have mostly just been taken from the series are a lot better imo. Besides the change in pacing or maybe precisely because of that I think the characters are way more likeable and less annoying than they were in the series. This might just be because they cut out most parts where Asuka insults Shinji for 5 minutes and scenes like the elevator ride no its not deep just unnecessarily long or because Ive just gotten used to them.

The plot is also easier to follow there are a lot less cryptic scenes that require you to pull up a Reddit discussion to properly understand everything though the majority of this movie focuses on the characters especially Asuka and Rei which I think is a good choice. I often thought that one of the biggest problems with Eva isnt necessarily the pacing but the fact that the focus is on the convoluted plot instead of just the characters which are way more interesting imo at least now that they arent completely insufferable. Theres also an entirely new character which we didnt get to see too much of but Im excited to see what role shell play in the following movies. I definitely like her more than both Asuka and Rei personalitywise as she acts like an actual human being instead of an anime character.
Visually this movie can be both absolutely beautiful and pretty bad. Its from the late 2000s which was around the time where CG became more popular in anime but imo it was definitely overused in this movie. Scenes that couldve easily been 2D animated without much effort instead relied on wide angle shots with tons of detail which then obviously required the use of CG... I dont think its a huge issue as the movie still looks great overall and Id even go as far as to say that most scenes look better than the original. The colors the lighting which are arguably subjective and especially the animation have seen a huge improvement from start to finish. Again the CG might make certain scenes look worse but all in all Id still call the movie an improvement visually.

The sounddesign was really good for the most part except for the terrible audio mixing which made certain sound effects incredibly loud directly after a calm dialogue. For some reason this really stood out to me though it mightve just been me idk. On a more positive note the ending song Beautiful World is easily the best song from the Eva series so far and Im currently listening to it while writing the review.
Well I didnt think Id say this but Im actually enjoying Evangelion and I might even start recommending it to people if the next 2 movies hold up. Really good:
