Katayoku no Labyrinth is a littleknown shoujo manga which is a shame as it is Kyouko Kumagais masterpiece. If I could sum up this manga in a few words Id say a very pleasant surprise Ive known this manga since I was a teenager and something about the story quickly captivated me.
The story begins with Miyako our protagonist that feels shes not as great as her old sister Hotaru. Miyako doesnt have good grades and she spends her time playing video games. Like many shoujo heroines Miyako has an unrequited love in her friend Hiroto. However she never had the courage to confess to him. Until something unexpected happens and Miyako is given a key a key that has a power she couldnt even imagine.
Now lets talk about the characters. I dont think the characters in this manga are very difficult to understand love guides them and becomes in a way their reason for living. Miyako is described as a normal and plain girl but i find her sweet and infinitely kind Shes a sensitive character with low selfesteem yet shes still very honest with her feelings. I like the way shes written: she hesitates she cries she causes troubles but shes considerate and works hard. I find these aspects of her very human and I like how little by little we can see her improve without erasing her initial characters personality. Id also like to talk a little bit about the other two main characters Tsukasa and Hiroto.

Tsukasa is possibly the most important and essential character in the manga After all Miyakos future would never have existed if he hadnt intervened. He got my heart very quickly thanks to his feelings for Miyako he only wants her to be happy and live well. Hes a little misunderstood at first but hes a very kind and considerate boy The more the story progressed the more I loved Tsukasa and I even thought it was impossible to love him more but I was wrong. I think there is no better person than him for Miyako. I dont think there is a more passionate and pitiful character than him in the manga.
Tsukasa has a best friend and his name is Hiroto Even if Hiroto is one of the main cast I dont have positive feelings for him. There were certain moments that I felt sorry for him and I tried to understand him as best I could but hes still a selfish repulsive and manipulative character in my eyes. Anyway enough of Hiroto Id like to talk a bit about Hotaru Miyakos sister and Hana Miyakos best friend. Unlike Miyako Tsukasa and Hiroto these characters are supporting characters but their roles are still significant. I like that the mangaka decided to put them more in value and show more about them.

I havent read many mangas with time manipulation but it didnt stop me to find the plot very charming and refreshing The plot might not be perfect and there are a few holes and questions without answers however I feel the main focus of the plot and the time manipulation were well explained I also like how all questions werent answered right away because it allows us to have our own theories we only discover the last missing pieces to understand everything towards the end of the manga. One of the most memorable moments is the relationship between Tsukasa and Miyako It feels very balanced because its healthy and soft with a little angst.
Before finishing Ive to talk about a very important point the art. Im a big fan of Kumagais art Im in love with the way she draws the characters their expressions the magical stuffs and places It gives me a lot of nostalgia because it reminds me a lot of 2010s shoujos which makes sense since its a manga that was created in 2014. Id like more people to appreciate her art because its very stunning to me.

Overall it was such a fun and lovely read There are a few heavy topics cw: sucide funerals but its minimal and its not very explicit. In my point of view this adds some depth to the characters motives and why they go so far as to travel through time. Even if I dont like a few aspects I prefer to remember what made me fall in love with this manga rather than what I didnt like. The theme is very original the plot is mysterious and intriguing and the characters excluding Hiroto are lovely
I really enjoyed Katayoku no Labyrinth and I recommend it to all fantasy shoujo fans I wanted to create a review for people who are hesitant to start it or for people who are interested in the manga. This is my first review so I apologize if there are some mistakes and thank you for reading my review until the end
