Ive actually never done karaoke before. I dont sing in front of other people because Im notoriously terrible and tone deaf. Im the kind of person who would absolutely win SuckySong King if I were forced to participate in the yakuza singing contest. Its unbelievably bad. I think Id need to find my own Satomi in order to sing in front of everyone and not embarrass myself so I get where Kyoujis coming from. Not that I would ever join the mafia and force a middle schooler to teach me how to sing... Id just make my friend who takes voice lessons help me but only if it were in a situation where Id have to have a horrible tattoo if I sang badly... Anyways that rambling made no sense so Ill get to the plot. Satomi is the president of his middle schools choir club but hes struggling a bit since hes a soprano about to hit puberty. After a competition hes approached by Kyouji a member of the yakuza who has decided that Satomis school has the best choir around. And what he wants is for Satomi to teach him how to sing karaoke for his bosss competition. You see if he loses he will be the SuckySong King and his boss will give him a tattoo an amateurish tattoo of something he hates. This begins the strange relationship between a choir boy and a yakuza. This manga was cute and funny and I appreciated it so much. The dynamics between the uptight and serious Satomi and the intimidating yet kindhearted Kyouji was absolutely endearing. The sense of humor was great. I loved imagining Kyouji trying to sing high pitched songs with a super deep baritone. I think this would make a really cute movie since it would be able to incorporate actual bad singing into it which would make it funnier. Also the joke about the Hello Kitty tattoo sent me into hysterics every time. It was interesting since I thought it was going to take a dark turn which was odd since everyone was talking about how funny it was not how sad it was. Fortunately it was a fakeout and while I laughed since it seemed warped enough to be Kyoujis sick sense of humor I was relieved since it would be a huge tonal clash. I did predict that it was a fake out but I had to be certain. I read this deliberately because everything else I was reading involved dark stuff drama and separated siblings who got confused with each other. I needed something funny and thats what I got fortunately. It did feel unnecessary and out of left field though. Theres even an extra chapter about Kyouji before he joined the yakuza which was actually really fun. Its sort of like he didnt choose the yakuza life the yakuza life chose him. But of course in the most chaotic way possible. Im also going to clarify that this isnt BL which is a huge relief since theres a pretty big age gap there especially since theyre a middle schooler and an adult man. For some reason looking at the cover I had the impression it was but after I saw some people talking about it I realized that I was very wrong about my impressions and Im happy about that. I do not want 30yearolds dating 14yearolds in my manga because thats creepy weird and makes me uncomfortable. The characters are simple but enjoyable. Satomis high strung and serious to a fault and I just feel like hes just so annoyed by Kyouji following him around which is funny because hes like 14 and Kyoujis a grown man. Hes just constantly tense with all the gang stuff going on around him while being done with everyones craziness and bad singing. Despite his grumbling he really does care for Kyouji. Kyouji is the bringer of chaos. Everywhere he goes trouble follows not that he wants it. Hes cheerful but intimidating and he just wants the best for his young mentor. Hes the type of person to sing Let It Go from Frozen super dramatically and claim with a straight face that its his alltime favorite song. Theyre a great duo and Id love to see more of them. The art is super clean. It has very bold thick lines and it has a smooth look with its simplicity. However it also feels hand drawn. Even if it was drawn digitally it strongly reminds me of the pen and ink drawings my aunt would make for me to color and cut out as paper dolls. It just feels organic? I dont know if thats the correct term but thats whats coming to mind. I also love how the characters facial expressions perfectly line up with their personalities and demeanors. Its just an adorable manga about an odd pair of very unlikely friends bonding over music. Its unabashedly ridiculous and fun and I love it. Id recommend it to anyone looking for a light and funny read.
