Whenever I have a ton of homework or lots of big projects that are due very very soon I always feel the desire to read or finish random manga instead of doing what Im supposed to. And this one just got an anime announcement which I predicted. I refuse to shut up about my accomplishment since any shoujo we get adapted is a victory especially if its a good one. I was a bit worried since I dont love The Ice Guy and the Cool Female Colleague and the two had a similar feel in the beginning. Theyre both slice of life webcomics with little drama or tension and I have to be in an extremely specific mood to enjoy Ice Guy. If Im not in that specific mood I will find it boring and force myself through it. My opinion on that series changes daily but this isnt a review of The Ice Guy its a review of Mr. Villain. However this series had a bit more of a spark which Ice Guy didnt have for me. It reminded me more of one of the other current shoujo webcomic adaptations Play it Cool Guys instead. The reason that one never was a chore was because I could see myself in the characters with their subtle clumsy mistakes. This one also has something particular to draw me but well get to that later. Mr. Villains Day Off doesnt really have a story since its very much an episodic slice of life comic. It follows the general of an evil alien army who wants to take over Earth. However even evil alien armies let their employees have days off. Fighting rangers is a fulltime job and General likes his free time. On his days off hes just enjoying his life. Hes got cute pandas to look at cats to pet and ice cream to try. On his own General is actually a really nice guy. He helps lost children compliments people and does things that make peoples days a little brighter. Of course hes still plotting humanitys destruction. It is his job. Hes very silly and very dramatic. His inner monologue is what you would expect from a comically evil Power Ranger villain discovering things he likes about Earth. The way hell talk about replacing humans with pandas as the dominant species along with aliens made me giggle. Hes not very expressive but theres a lot to appreciate about him. He may be a villain who wants to take over the world but that doesnt mean hes a rude guy. You can still be courteous and love cute things even if you want to eradicate humanity. I also appreciated the rangers. They take some time but they become adorable to watch. Red is scatterbrained and gets lost easily but hes the quickest to justice and the most likely to approach General on his days off. Blue is more serious and is the older brother of the group. He has a friendly rivalry with Pink the brawler of the group. She wants to be a magical girl instead of a ranger but shes insecure about it. Black is their makeshift father figure left with the new generation of ranger children and no parenting skills. Hes tired all the time but he cares about the kids. Finally we have the twins who have a unique power are mature for their ages and are too young to enter combat. They all feel like one huge family and I love them for that. Red even thought that the other four kids were biological siblings from how they acted when he met them which I think is super cute and funny. Its particularly touching with what we know about how their powers are passed down and how much family would mean to them after that. Its the found family of the rangers and the silliness of Generals inner monologue and the duality of his actions that make the story so charming. Thats the hook that keeps me engaged the same way Play It Cool Guys has clumsy scatterbrained characters who I can relate to. The art isnt super unique but its cute and does the job. The villain designs are pretty cool though. Generals more detailed design when hes on duty is quite different from how he looks on his own wandering around in his trench coat. The rangers look cute but their designs arent anything special or complex. Nothing about this series is particularly deep. However its a bunch of fun to read since its just that cute. I have a feeling it might go into more detail with the rangers and the duality of General. I wonder if hell be won over to the side of the humans with the power of friendship. Whether it goes places with that story or if it stays in the episodic format its a fun fluffy read. Its not complicated or thought provoking in the slightest and thats okay. Sometimes you just want to heal and watch Power Rangers/Super Sentai characters be wholesome when theyre offduty.
