What would you do if your crush had a family so strict that you couldnt even hold hands? Honestly the Katsuragi family council seems like a nightmare and I would not want to approach them literally ever. Also this was way tamer than I expected it to be. It was kind of funny since from the premises of this and another manga I started Furare Girl I was expecting this one to be the raunchier one but it was the exact opposite. Anyways enough of my incoherent ramblings. Lets get into the story.
Keiichiro Katsuragi the heir of a family of politicians and Yuuri Hasegawa a trendy freespirited normal high school girl fall in love. Unfortunately for them they have been forbidden from having any form of contact that the Katsuragi family deems sexual or inappropriate until Keiichiro turns 18. This of course includes normal couple things like kissing and even harmless hugs and hand holding. To top it off Keiichiro is monitored by his family 24/7 so secrecy is almost out of the question. However the two of them are desperate to make their relationship work and are willing to stay by each others sides even if the Katsuragis are determined to keep them apart.
I found the story to be pretty funny even though it didnt lean into the crazy scenarios as much as I would like. The jokes didnt always hit for me. In general I found it to be funniest when it leaned into the bizarre situations or when Keiichiro just showed how socially inept he could be. I found him to be a great comically serious character at times.
Theres more romance than comedy and I did find myself super invested in their relationship. The characters truly care for each other and a major aspect of their relationship is accepting the parts of each other that they arent crazy about. They both actively try and help each other grow and they have such a loyalty to each other. In the very end of the series I was just so happy for the characters. I just wanted them to have a normal relationship since they deserved it. I also found the way they approached and grappled with the Katsuragi family traditions to be engaging. Both of them begin to develop nuanced ways of thinking about the strict family rules. It was not something I expected but it was a very pleasant surprise.
Keiichiro is comically serious but hes very sweet. He wants to please both his family and be there for Yuuri. Hes weighed down by his own emotions and he often tries to deal with his struggles on his own without burdening others. While he was very silly I found him to be a quite nuanced character. While Yuuri might not have complex family drama like Keiichiro shes far from being a bland character. Shes very strongwilled and freespirited in addition to being very stubborn. She cares for Keiichiro deeply and takes her own approaches to dealing with the family. She was also incredibly interesting and I appreciated just how accepting she was.
The side characters were not particularly nuanced but most of them were funny. I particularly liked Keiichiros guard and older brother who were two of the ones who got the most development. I only disliked the Katsuragi family heads just because they were so set in their ways and unreasonable. However every other character was enjoyable to watch.
The art was super nice and I loved all the character designs. I also found the sketches of the characters for the comedic bits to be cute and fun to look at. While the art wasnt particularly distinct outside of the color pages I found it to be very nice.
I think this was a very solid romcom. I found it to be a fun super exaggerated take on a common obstacle among dating teens: the family. While most parents wouldnt have bodyguards spying on their son and his girlfriend Im sure many high school students can relate to doing some things in secret due to overbearing and overprotective family members.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series and I can see other people having a similar experience.
