It seems that A1 just keep oneupping themselves every season until the only competition remaining is the season prior. In the oversaturated world of Romcoms KaguyaSama alone stands atop that mountain as the undisputed king. What sets it apart from the rest is its ability to continuously adapt and evolve its characters whilst maintaining its upper echelon sense of humour. As we come to find out later this season this isnt simply two tsunderes trying to best one another each have their own realistic and completely justifiable reasons as to why they wont confess their love to one another. This fantastic development isnt just limited to the main duo every single member of this wonderfully diverse cast establishes their own individual personality and character arcs that come off as so very authentic and genuine. From Ishigami breaking out of his shell and confessing his love to Hayasaka learning to drop her facade and making true friends of her own there isnt a person on this roster that isnt receiving their fair share of attention. Its worth noting the absolutely magnificent dialogue and in particular the way Kaguya describes Miyuki when Hayasaka asks her to put what she loves about him into words. The first example she gives of When were walking in a crowd and theres someone that has strayed away I love his face when hes glancing behind. The way Kaguya mentions a hyperspecific example instead of some generalization sells how madly shes in love. She could have just said I love how nice he is and that wouldve communicated the same idea. But this is specificity you only care about when youre head over heels for someone. The climax certainly really lives up to the UltraRomantic part of the title. The entire sequence with Kaguyas inner monologue on the rooftop was outstanding. It recaps her entire character arc over the past 35 odd episodes so well and her need to be loved and her fear of rejection after spending a lifetime of selfisolation. In most other longrunning romance plots characters dont confess for simply no other reason than Because they are a tsundere. But here Kaguya wants Shirogane to confess first because believes shes too horrible of a person for someone as unconditionally kind as him to have actually fallen in love with and Miyuki on the other hand wants Kaguya to confess because he feels so inferior to her that he cant see himself as her equal unless she confesses to him. Despite all their narcissism they both crave validation by being confessed to first. And while yes it did take 3 seasons to get to this point with at times even Hayasaka and the Narrator going meta and breaking the fourth wall to express their frustrations it never felt like it was overstaying its welcome in the slightest. But at the end of the day they never needed to confess they just needed to let the other know they loved each other. And what better way to move the status quo forward yet stay true to the title of the series than to do the mutual confession with a silent kiss? I havent even touched on the wonderful production levels A1 have put into this. Once again they seem to go above and beyond what is required to make a faithful adaptation and craft a truly wonderful experience akin to EightySix. They didnt need to make a whole new ending for Episode 5 nor did they need to make the finale an hourlong but they did that because they felt that was whats best for the story and Im eternally grateful. If KaguyaSama ended here it would be regarded as one of the alltime best anime romcoms. But it does not end here. I can not wait to see what they have lined up. God Bless Aka and God Bless you A1 Studios.
