Among Us might be the best manga to come out this year and dare I say this entire decade in general. Thats right the 2020s have just started and yet we already have a narrative masterpiece few could hope to reach.
Dont let the cute art fool you. Among Us is an extremely violent and horrifying manga. Within just 18 pages the author has masterfully covered such complex topics like betrayal friendship and given a deep analysis of the human psyche.
The main villain Egg is one of the deepest villains in all of animanga. I found it extremely moving how he put up the facade of being a cheerful person while hiding his inner violent tendencies. I believe this perfectly portrays the harsh reality that cannibalistic psychopaths such as me have to face in modern day society.
Furthermore King ejecting Glasses after he tried to explain how Egg might have been the impostor is a sad parallel to how untrustworthy people have become nowadays. They pretend to be your friends and then stab you in the back at the last moment sometimes literally. I believe no one could blame King for being wary of Glasses in that moment.
The story serves as an amazing thriller. It starts off slow and fun luring you into a false sense of security. However the tension starts rising with the mysterious blackout and the heartbreaking reveal of Egg being the impostor and savagely eating every chunk of Caps body. However its not over yet just as you finish crying your eyes out over Cap dying and Eggs betrayal Delinquent loses his sick hair which SUSpiciously was made of a solid material and not being able to take the loss he dies on the spot. I have genuinely never cried so much before. This manga is perfect at delivering emotions and making you care about the characters.
Another thing to praise is the art style. Its cute but beautiful and simple. This is in stark contrast to the story of course which is gritty harsh and dark. The irony between these two artstyles is what I believe a greater metaphor for the human psyche what appears on the surface might not be what lurks within.
Of course its not all perfect. Theres multiple things missing that I wouldve loved to see in this adaptation. For example the famous venting maneuver would have been a treat to see. Also Im sorely dissapointed that there was no cameo of Hank Schrader saying sussy baka which would have been an amazing tribute to the millions of fans of the hit game Among Us.
Although even with these flaws I truly believe nothing else in this world will ever come close to the greatness Among Us has achieved. Concluding my review I will give this series a 10/10 for being the best thing to exist since cheese toast.
