Unpopular opinion but Komisan manga sucks ass. Ive been reading for over a year now and Im up to date so thats all 328 chapters and it is the single most boring and fillerreliant series Ive read or watched to date. Out of those 328 chapters maybe 100 150 are actually either meaningful for the main characters development relevant to the story and progression or actually funny. The rest really arent. Spoilers below. Theres way too many chapters of trash comedy based on some new character with a gag name that then quickly disappears into irrelevancy. Way too many chapters on minor side characters like Yamai Ren the dogshit yandere or the sweaty girl/narcissistic boy who just sort of exist in their own bubbles. Yes these characters show growth and development and improve over time minor characters such as these almost all had some sort of issue or social hang up upon introduction that has since been resolved thanks to classmates/friends more often than not involving Tadano and Komi in some way. The issue is that while these minor characters show normal character growth and progression the MAIN characters dont. Tadano is has been and always will be the vanilla clean slate good boy who is perfectly kind and courteous to friends and is happy to throw himself into helping his peers. Im not saying thats a bad thing just that there has been nothing about him that has changed since the very beginning of the manga. You meet him learn his character and thats it hes set in stone for the next 300+ chapters. Komi for her part is similar. At the beginning shes a shy introverted girl who really struggles with talking to people but thanks to the saint protagonist she slowly works on her goal of getting more comfortable speaking and making friends. But SHE herself doesnt do anything. Even now by chapter 328 she still struggles with speaking. She STILL relies on writing out her thoughts on notebook paper or something else nearby or at the absolute most whispers. SHE AND TADANO WENT ON A DATE A COUPLE CHAPTERS AGO AND SHE COULDNT SPEAK TO HER BOYFRIEND/BEST FRIEND WHEN IT WAS JUST THE TWO OF THEM ALONE. Komi is an emotionless brick wall. I cant see anything even slightly redeeming about her besides her looks. Shes pretty but she hasnt grown hasnt changed hasnt even attempted to do ANYTHING to deal with her issue that gives the series its title. Shes made progress towards her I want to make 100 friends goal yeah but that wasnt her doing. Other characters are created meet Komi fawn over her for her looks realize shes a dork and decide to be friends. She doesnt do anything she just sits there. The ONE redeeming factor this manga has for it is Rumiko Manbagi introduced at some point when the characters reach their 2nd year of high school as the makeupobsessed classmate in Tadano and Komis class. And I mean makeupobsessed she put Cakey from Grand Blue to shame initially. But under the 8 pounds of cosmetics and stereotypical gyaru facade was a studious dorky and insecure girl who used her makeup as a shield to hide herself from the world and act out a persona. She is the single character in the entire goddamn manga that has clear developmental arcs. She started out wearing too much makeup and hiding herself became friends with Tadano and Komi learned to love herself and build self confidence and becomes the life of the class building friendships and generally living up to her happygolucky gyaru appearance. She is the ONLY character in the entire manga to have an arc like that. I think its unacceptable for the 2 lead characters to be entirely static in a story thats gone on for this long. I think its really dumb to have the one singular character that actually behaves like a human being to be used solely to make the 2 mannequins realize theyre in love. I think I could continue but Ive made my point by now. The funny thing is that I didnt always hate the manga if I did I would never have gotten this far. The first 20 50 chapters were... funny but a little rough? because the constant reliance on name puns got old. But it got really good really fast... unfortunately the reliance on pointless filler also really ramped up quickly. The peak of the manga for me was the school festival where Komi and Manbagi have a long heart felt discussion about how they both love Tadano and still value each other as best friends. Since that point Ive liked less and less of whats happened and gotten more and more annoyed with the filler/story... to the point that I was straight up pissed when Tadano rejected Manbagi and got together with Komi. Which yeah I knew would happen its KOMI on the cover but still. At one point I would give this manga a solid 9/10 rec but all things considered thinking back on how Ive felt about it lately and how it feels as one entire 300+ chapter monstrosity Im feeling more 4/10. Ill update later when the manga ends so at the rate its going thatll be chapter 600 several years from now.
